Spare Parts for the Kawasaki Voyager XII

Since owning a couple of Kawasaki Voyager motorcycles, I've been interested in replacement parts that I didn't have to purchase at top dollar through the bike shop. So I've been saving information about parts and wanted to have a central location to refer to...so as I pick up info, I'll add to this list. If you have a part that you think should be added to this list, please send e-mail to me and I'll add it at my earliest opportunity.

Batteries

Supercrank P/N 50N18LA2 (Sam's Stores)
Yuasa P/N SY50-N18L-AT (OEM)
Yuasa P/N Y1X50L-BS (sealed)
Yacht P/N SY50-N18L-A
WestCo P/N 12V22
Note: To bypass the battery light, hook a 100 Ohm resistor in line with the original wire going to the battery and terminate it at the positive battery terminal.

Carburetor Synch

Synching carbs is a snap. Obviously you have to remove the "tank" and the
box that holds the air cleaner so you can see the top of the carbs.

You will see 4 black caps pointed upward, one by each carb. Remove the
caps & hook up the 4 hoses of the sycher to each one. No fittings are
required.

Firing order is not important but just make sure you hook up the tubes in
the same order as the carbs, left to right.

Adjustments are made using 3 screws. One screw is between the two carbs on
the right, the 2nd screw is between the two carbs on the left, and the 3rd
screw is in the center.

Use one of the "side" screws to synch the 2 carbs on the respective side.
Then use the other "side" screw to synch the other 2 carbs.

Lastly, use the center screw two synch the two "pairs".

Fork Brace

Get the SuperBrace fork brace for your Kawasaki Voyager. It gets rid of that low speed wobble (especially in parking lots) and really clamps the bike down on high speed turns. The model number is 4412 (they don't make them for the 6 cyl. anymore), and you can order it directly from the web page SUPERBRACE.COM. It's worth the price!

Radio/Intercom Information

Here is a .pdf that shows a schematic of how to interface a 'standard' CB into the Voyager wiring system.  Click HERE to get it.  Many thanks to Phil (Stargazer) for the schematic, he can be reached at kawirdr5354@yahoo.com.

Info for the wiring harness or headset:
J&M Corporation
Part # HI-11
headset junction lead kit for Kawasaki Voyager XII
http://www.jmcorp.com/

It's kind of expensive @ $50.

The radio end is a 6 pin DIN:
1 front mike
2 mike ground
3 speaker ground
4 right speaker
5 left speaker
6 rear mike

The helmet ends are 5 pin DINs:
1 mike (front for rider, rear for passenger)
2 mike ground
3 speaker ground
4 right speaker
5 left speaker

The pinout on the 5 pin connector on the back of the tape deck is numbered in an unusual manner, as follows:

            2
        5 4
         3 1

This would be looking at the connecter on the back of the unit from outside the case. Don't know if the posts are numbered on the connector or not. Only 3 of the five pins are used. Beginning at the keyway, going clockwise:

3 -- Left channel + output
5 -- Right channel + output
2 -- ground ( - ) common to both channels
4 -- not used
1 -- not used

Here's more info about the connectors, retrieved from the Voyager forum:

There is an 8 Pin DIN plug that exits the Clarion Sytems at the rear and has a brown band on it. That is where the "factory" CB unit connects. The pin-outs are as follows:

Pin 1 Ground brown (wire)
Pin 2 Squelch Signal (N/A for external CB) green
Pin 3 CB Audio out (Ext. CB Audio into Clarion) blue
Pin 4 Push to Talk (Ext. switch on handlebar that puts ext. CB into transmit and switches the Clarion system from listen to talk--two seperate circuits needed. Double Pole single throw switch) white
Pin 5 Drivers Mic (Audio from drivers mic to ext. CB mic circuit) yellow
Pin 6 Accessory (N/A with external CB) red
Pin 7 Not used
Pin 8 Ground black< center>

There are two pigtail cables exiting the rear of the Clarion unit. One for the intercom and the other for the CB interface. Both have female DIN connectors; a 6 pin for the intercom and an 8 pin for the CB. In order to connect directly, one has to have a male DIN plug. The pins are labeled on the inside of the plugs where the wires are soldered. It should not be a problem to establish the correct wiring pattern when you are ready to connect the wires.

Most CBs have a provision for connecting ext. mics and speakers as well as PTT. If the unit you have supports these external devices, you should be able to get it connected and working through the Clarion system on the Voyager.

Speedometer Tip

The stock speedometer seems to read consistently high (about 5 mph), to correct this you can purchase a sensor with a different gear ratio. The gear located at the end of the speedometer cable has twenty-five teeth, if the number is reduced to twenty-four teeth, the speedometer will then read five to six miles an hour slower. The sensor for the speedometer at the front wheel must be replaced with Kawasaki Part No. 41060-1025. You must also put in a new oil seal, Kawasaki Part No. 92049-1057.

Tail Light Fix

The tail light on the Voyager has been 'painted over' since the 1986 model. Rumor is they got heat from Honda about how similar they looked from the rear, guess there were lots of Gold Wings trying to catch up with Voyager owners.

If you want to restore the center tail light, there are a number of options:

  • Remove the paint from your existing tail light. The most recommended way is to use a 'citrus based' paint remover from places like AutoZone and install 1157 sockets wired up. Cost is usually around $10
  • Replace with 1986 tail light, Kawasaki part number 23026-1080.
  • Replace with part number 23025-1129 from www.cycle-parts.com, include the wiring harness part number 26001-1760.
  • Temperature Gauge Fix

It has been reported that several have had problems with the Voyager XII water temperature gauge reading either low or not at all. It has been traced to an inadequate ground. The fix for this involves checking the grounding for this gauge. You can make a small ground wire to run from a thermostat housing (which contains the temperature sender) bolt up to a 6mm bolt in the frame just behind the steering head, or another good grounding point.
